Q: What is the difference between a Registered Psychologist, a Counsellor, and a Social Worker?

There are so many different titles it's confusing!

A: A Registered Psychologist (R. Psych) holds a minimum of a Master's level degree (MA, MSc, MACP) and may also have Doctoral level training (PhD, PsyD) with additional training including 1600 hours of supervised practice. They are also required to hold a practice permit which requires yearly educational training and upkeep of credentials. A Counsellor may have different levels of education and requirements. They may hold membership with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and be designated as a Canadian Clinical Counsellor (CCC). A Social Worker may have a diploma or degree (BSW/MSW) and be registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW). Insurance companies vary regarding what they will cover when it comes to credentials of your treatment professional.

Q: What is online therapy? Telehealth?

A: There are several ways to utilize telehealth services including telephone, and video. Our office utilizes Jane

software to provide a secure video connection. For those who prefer to access services without the hassle

of having to attend an office setting or live a long distance from our office this can be a great option!

Q: How long will I need to see a therapist for?

A: The short answer is it depends. Some people come to therapy with a specific issue such as the death

of a loved one, an issue at work, or a family conflict. This could require fewer sessions than something

like a long term addiction, treatment resistant depression or anxiety, or trauma that may require long term care.
